From the Archives: The Story of the ‘St John Ambulance Cadets’ Painting

Museum of the Order of St John Judi McGinley, Museum Assistant

We recently received an enquiry from the curator of a museum in Ontario, Canada who wanted some information pertaining to a framed poster which was discovered in one of their store rooms.

The poster in question was reproduced from an oil painting entitled ‘St John Ambulance Cadets’ by Scottish artist Anna Katrina Zinkeisen (1901-1976). The 1952 painting was commissioned by St John Ambulance to be used for the reproduction of publicity material.

Anna volunteered with the St John Ambulance and the British Red Cross, where she trained as a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) during the First World War, and nursed wartime casualties in London during the Blitz.

In addition to her voluntary duties, Zinkeisen was also an official war artist during the Second World War.

Anna’s painting is part of our collection.
