L’Inconnue de la Seine

Plaster
20th century
LDOSJ:SJA030417

This plaster model is reproduced from a death mask, reputedly cast from the face of an unknown woman who drowned in the river Seine in Paris, in the late 19th century. The cast was mass produced in the 20th century, and in 1958, the face was used in the prototype “Resusci-Annie” mannequin, manufactured by Peter Safar and Asmund Laerdal. Since its introduction, “Resusci-Annie” has been crucial to the First Aid training provided by St John Ambulance.
