Maltese Coffee and Culture

Museum of the Order of St John

From 11am to 12.30pm enjoy a delicious Maltese coffee, a dainty pastry and the chance to learn more about the fascinating history behind an awe inspiring maritime model.

At 12.30pm Collections Volunteer Paul Gwilliam will speak about the model of the Maltese Galley on display in the Museum, which dates from the 1770s and is on loan from Royal Museums Greenwich.  It is a model of a ‘corsair’.  The word comes from the Italian, which means ‘one who gives chase’ and that is exactly what it did, striking fear into merchants and travelers crossing the Mediterranean for nearly 300 years.
