The Lives and Art of Doris & Anna Zinkeisen

Museum of the Order of St John

Please note that owing to scheduled rail strikes on 9 November this meeting will now be held online. A link with joining instructions will be emailed to you when you register on Eventbrite. If you have any questions please email museum@sja.org.uk

An evening lecture in partnership with the St John Historical Society.

Find out about the remarkable artists Doris and Anna Zinkeisen, who were leading lights of the 1920s and 30s art scene. As well as their glittering art careers, the sisters also volunteered with the Order of St John and the British Red Cross, training as Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses during the First World War and nursing wartime casualties in London during the Blitz. Join us for a lively introduction to their life and work which is enjoying renewed public interest following the publication of a new book in 2021 (The Art of Doris & Anna Zinkeisen: Philip Kelleway, Emma Roodhouse and Nicola Evans).

Emma Roodhouse (she/her) is an art curator and works freelance on research projects as well as at Colchester and Ipswich Museums. She has curated exhibitions on Constable, Rodin’s The Kiss and Suffolk musician Ed Sheeran. She has been awarded grants from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art to research Constable’s early career, resulting in the exhibition and publication Creating Constable in 2021–2022.

Tickets are free and must be pre-booked via the Museum’s Eventbrite page. Donations welcome.

This event will be live subtitled by Stagetext.
