From the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, through to her death in February 1960, Edwina Mountbatten worked tirelessly to promote St John Ambulance as a modern international first aid organisation. In 1942 her continued efforts to support the Joint War Organisation of the British Red Cross and the Order of St John resulted in her appointment as Superintendent-in-Chief of the St John Ambulance Brigade, a position she would hold for the next eighteen years.
Edwina’s work with St John was far-reaching, from the inspection of Brigade divisions and hospitals in Britain, to tours of Europe and the Far East. In the aftermath of the Second World War, she supported the successful return of more than 90,000 prisoners of war who had been captured by the Japanese.
