An evening lecture in partnership with the St John Historical Society.
Four round churches survive in England. They have an architectural atmosphere unique to themselves. They were built to re-present in England the Rotunda of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and arguably the octagonal Dome of the Rock too. The rotunda at Clerkenwell was demolished surprisingly early; the Templars’ grand rotunda at “the New Temple” off Fleet Street still stands. It has been much repaired, most recently after the Blitz; but it is still powerfully evocative. Robin Griffith-Jones and colleagues at The Courtauld Institute of Art have convened two conferences for the study of these and similar churches; Robin will deploy the scholarly results in an account of the Temple Church and its peers.
The Rev Dr Robin Griffith-Jones is the Reverend and Valiant Master of the Temple at the Temple Church, and Reader in Theology at King’s College, London.
This talk will be held in the Priory Church of the Order of St John, and attendees will have the opportunity to visit the 12th-century crypt.
This talk will have live BSL interpretation by Theresa McWhirter, who is a NRCPD Registered BSL/English Interpreter.
