A light in the darkness. Adult St John Ambulance volunteer, Anna Zinkeisen, painted this portrait to be used on a poster encouraging more young people to join the Cadets. There is evidence that Anna was reusing a canvas on which she had previously painted another image. The image was available on a poster by May 1956.

Anna volunteered with St John Ambulance during the First and Second World Wars and was also an official war artist during the Second World War. You can read more about Anna, and her sister Doris, on our blog.
