For many years, the Revels Office under Queen Elizabeth I and King James I was situated in the old Priory buildings of the Order of St John. The Revels Office, and its overseer the Master of the Revels, played a vital role in court entertainments, and in the development of public and private theatrical performances. William Shakespeare was one of many playwrights who came with their companies to have their plays approved by the Master of the Revels.
