The Museum secures investment from Arts Council England to conserve St John’s Gate

We are thrilled to announce that the Museum has been awarded £413,015 in capital investment from Arts Council England’s Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND).

The funding will be used to repair and renew the roofs of St John’s Gate, improve the historic building’s resilience to extreme weather, and add state-of-the-art breathable insulation to increase energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.

These vital improvements will ensure that we can continue to share this remarkable architectural gem with audiences for decades to come. Work will begin later this year and we will remain open and accessible throughout.

Early Saturday closure

The Museum will be closed from 3pm today, Saturday 10th January 2026.  We will reopen as usual from 9:30am on Wednesday 14th January.

Christmas holidays

The Museum’s last day of opening before Christmas will be Saturday 20th December 2025. We will reopen in the new year on Friday 2nd January 2026.

Off the Shelves at St John's Gate: A Podcast Series

On 13th May 2024 we will be launching a new podcast series featuring new research into the history of the Order of St John in the later medieval and early modern periods – when the Order was headquartered on Rhodes and Malta, and our priory here in London was built. Each episode begins as we take an item off the shelves from our historic library collection, and explore different aspects of our history that it leads us to investigate.
